What Is Autism?

Autism is also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD.

Autism is a syndrome, which means it has many characteristics and symptoms, making every person with autism different from one another.

It is said, “If you know one person with autism, you know one person with autism.”

To put it simply, autism is a condition which affects a person’s ability to process, organize, and put together information. This affects many things, including their ability to communicate, their social and functioning skills, and their ability to learn. It is a neurodevelopmental disorder.

There are many forms and degrees of autism on the autism spectrum, and the disorder usually appears when a child is between 6 months and 3 years of age. The average age of diagnosis in the United States, however, is 5 years old.
